Marketplace Overview

Amazon US (amazon.com) sells in US dollars from an English-language storefront, though shoppers can switch the site to Spanish and see much of the product detail pages, navigation and customer service in translation. Sellers work in Seller Central at sellercentral.amazon.com, where the United States shares the North America and Brazil unified account with Canada, Mexico and Brazil, and advertise in the Amazon Ads console at advertising.amazon.com, which runs Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display here.

There is no VAT in the United States. Sales tax is set by states and localities, and where marketplace facilitator laws apply, Amazon calculates, collects and remits it on third-party sales. Shoppers see prices before tax, with estimated tax added at checkout at the rate for the delivery address and, in some states, the ship-from location. Amazon's ad reports also leave tax out of attributed sales, so the price you set, the sales credited to an ad and the revenue your margin rests on are one pre-tax figure, unlike stores where the shelf price includes VAT. Marketplace collection does not cover your tax interview in Seller Central or your income tax, so confirm both with an adviser.

Fulfillment has rules of its own here. Amazon sets FBA capacity limits for each storage type every month, shaped by your Inventory Performance Index score, sales history and forecasts, and Capacity Manager lets you offer a reservation fee for more room. Sending a shipment to the minimal number of inbound locations carries an inbound placement fee, which can be higher when that location is in the West, while accepting Amazon's split across several locations avoids it for qualifying shipments. Amazon Warehousing and Distribution stores bulk stock and replenishes FBA automatically, and Seller Fulfilled Prime puts the Prime badge on products you ship yourself. Each choice moves the delivery promise or your stock cover, and both feed the conversion rate your bids pay for. Shurq's dashboard compares the West, Central and East regions' share of your US sales with their share of your FBA units, so you can see whether stock sits where buyers are.

PPC Advertising Tips for Amazon US

1

Set Targets on the Pre-Tax Price

Break-even ACoS is the share of the price left after cost of goods and Amazon fees, and on amazon.com there is no sales tax to strip out first. Example: a $40 item with $12 cost of goods and $14 of referral and FBA fees keeps $14, so break-even ACoS is 35% and every target sits below it. One catch: attributed sales do not reflect discounts applied in the cart, so while a coupon or checkout promotion runs, recompute break-even on the price you actually collect.

2

Daypart Across US Time Zones

Amazon reports each hour in the advertising account's time zone, and its API examples show US accounts on Pacific time, so each reported hour blends shoppers on several local clocks: an East Coast evening shows up as late afternoon. Hawaii and most of Arizona keep standard time all year, so their offset from Pacific shifts when the rest of the country changes clocks in March and November. Set each hour from its revenue per click relative to the whole day, and shade bids rather than switching hours off. Dayparting schedules in Shurq's AI Ad Manager default to Pacific time for amazon.com, with Eastern, Central and Mountain time available.

3

Judge a Day Only After Its Lookback Closes

Amazon books a sale against the day of the ad click, and a day stays incomplete until its attribution window closes. For sellers, Sponsored Products looks back over a shorter window than Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display, so a total across ad types mixes window lengths, and orders cancelled soon after purchase are deducted later. On a Pacific time report the day also ends in the early hours of the next morning for a team on Eastern time. Treat recent days as provisional and hold bid cuts until their windows close.

4

Plan Around Announced Event Dates

Amazon announces Prime Day's dates each year and has moved it between months, so plan the summer from the announcement, not from last year's calendar. Prime Big Deal Days follows in October. Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday in November, with Black Friday the day after and Cyber Monday the Monday that follows. Mother's Day in May, Father's Day in June and back to school complete the calendar. Amazon's Extended Holiday Returns policy has let items bought in November and December come back through January, so judge holiday campaigns on units kept, not on December orders.

5

Bid to Stock Cover Under Capacity Limits

Sponsored Products needs an offer eligible to be the Featured Offer, so a stockout stops the ad along with the sale, and FBA capacity limits can cap your stock before demand does. Before raising top of search bids, check available and inbound units against the length of the push, and when cover is thin, ease bids so stock lasts until replenishment lands. Our guide to Amazon bid optimization covers adjusting bids for stock and time of day in steps small enough to measure.

6

Register the Brand Before Planning Sponsored Brands

Sponsored Products runs without Brand Registry, but Sponsored Brands is open to sellers only once they are enrolled in Amazon Brand Registry as the brand owner. That needs a pending or registered trademark, which for a US filing comes from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Until enrollment lands, launch on Sponsored Products: move converting search terms from automatic and broad match into exact match, negate them at the source, and hold the product collection, video and store spotlight formats for later.

Challenges

  • -Sales tax varies by state and locality, and while Amazon collects it on marketplace-facilitated orders, the tax interview and your income tax stay with you
  • -Monthly FBA capacity limits per storage type can cap a stock plan before demand does
  • -Sending stock to one inbound location carries a placement fee, and avoiding it means accepting Amazon's split across several locations
  • -Holiday returns can arrive in January, after December's spend and orders are already reported
  • -Sellers arriving from the UK or Australia need American product words: diaper rather than nappy, flashlight rather than torch, stroller rather than pram

Opportunities

  • +One North America and Brazil unified account reaches Canada, Mexico and Brazil from the same Seller Central login
  • +Remote Fulfillment with FBA lets enrolled US inventory serve Canadian, Mexican and Brazilian orders before you ship stock to those countries
  • +Listing prices and attributed ad sales are both pre-tax, so ACoS compares directly with the margin on the price you set
  • +Shoppers can switch amazon.com to Spanish, so your search term report can show whether Spanish queries deserve keywords of their own
